Triovassalos and pera Triovassalos
Driving
uphill from the port, we first come to Triovassalos, which is actually
two villages merged into one, with considerable commercial development.
There are two particularly interesting churches ... Agios Spiridonas
in Triovassalos
and Agios Georgios in Pera Triovassalos.
On Easter Sunday, there is an unusual tradition in these two villages.
The island people gather together to burn
an effigy of Judas,
a tradition which has survived, with some modifications in various parts
of Greece, since early
Christian times. After, there is a contest in a large field which divides
the two villages. The young men throw dynamite
and the winner is the village with the most ear-splitting performance!
Very close to Triovassalos is another picturesque village called Plakes. Here, for the last few years, crowds of people collect on the day after Good Friday. They watch the moving ceremony of the figure of Christ being taken down from one of the three crosses, which stand on a rocky hill just above the village.
